Rice & Beans Night

Our kids are safe at the orphanage. They have food, beds, caretakers and secure shelter- unlike so many Haitians right now. But Angel House as a whole IS suffering. And you can help.

I have a challenge for you. For each of you. I would like you to choose one night this week to eat a simple dinner of rice and beans. No meat. No sides. No desserts. Just ONE meal of plain rice and beans. This dinner will cost you next to nothing. Then I ask that you would take the money you would have spent on an ordinary dinner and send it to Three Angels Children's Relief. According to my hit counter I receive at least 150 visitors to this blog per day. If 150 people donate $10 apiece we will raise $1500 for the orphanage. If we all do this once a week for one month it will amount to $6000.

There is a great need for donations in these trying times. Here is an excerpt of an email from our orphanage today:

As you all know the storms that have hit Haiti have been brutal. I am 100% sure that this is going to continue to be an issue for a long time regarding access to food. Simple supply and demand tells us prices, that have been rising for many months, are only going to continue to go up. I am very concerned about how much and if it will even come to the point that we have a problem getting food, as we did during the coup of Aristide.

Secondly, the orphanage's van is broken down. Without a working vehicle adoptions slow down even more as obtaining documents and getting to appointments becomes more difficult...

I have seen first hand over and over again that when our adoption team needs to take public transportation, it really slows up their day. No one is more frustrated with our current car breakdowns than [the guy handling adoptions for our orphanage]. I caught tap taps and hiked up hills with him recently and I would say half of what we wanted to get done was accomplished.

Please, do this. I'm not asking you to go hungry. Just to eat one simple meal that is cheap & easy to prepare- a meal that many Haitians would give just about anything for right now. While the rice is cooking you can write your check and put it in the mail. I know times are tough, and that individually we may not have a lot to spare. But together we can make a real difference. Tonight is our first rice and beans night. When is yours?
